In the dance world everyone knows everyone. It's a small world so you become friends with people from all over your state, country and the world.
I was good friends with another dancer in Melbourne, Jaxon. His family owned an apartment in QLD near where I lived so whenever they came up for holidays we would always hang out. They were actually staying in QLD when I split from my previous dance partner and we started chatting about the possibility of me moving to Melbourne to dance with Jaxon as he was currently looking for a dance partner. This was a big decision as it meant moving out of home, leaving the kids academy, living with a family I hardly knew and moving across Australia with no close friends in that state. But it was the best decision.
Unfortunately, due to covid we haven't had an easy ride. We started training in Melbourne and then the first lockdown hit. I decided to go home to Qld for the duration of the lockdown to spend it with my family. When I returned we decided to go for an intensive weekend in Wollongong with some world renowned ballroom coaches, Alan and Donna Shingler. 3 days turned into 3 weeks. We couldn’t get enough of it and we just loved every minute of dancing and learning in Wollongong. We were then struck with another lockdown as borders to NSW, VIC and QLD started to close, so we made a quick decision to drive back to Melbourne and only made the border within a matter of hours. I then flew home and waited out the next lockdown. We then decided to move to Wollongong permanently and learn of Alan and Donna Shingler full time. We started renting our own apartment, got jobs to help support our dreams and started working hard to make a career for ourselves in the dance world. In 2 years of dancing together we have only done 1 competition together and I think out of everyone, Jaxon has been through the most lockdowns and isolations. But our journey has only just started and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us next.
